Statute
The Grand Lodges of the Mediterranean (G.L.M.)
Article 1: Name and Legal Form
By these statutes and the founding assembly held in Malta on April 6, 2024, an unincorporated association named “The Grand Lodges of the Mediterranean” (G.L.M.) is established.
The association is formed by the common will of its members to unite for a shared purpose, without acquiring legal personality. It is governed by the general rules of the French Civil Code, particularly regarding contracts, liability, and asset management.
Article 2: Principles and Objectives
The association consists of a union of regular Masonic lodges or groups of lodges located on the three continents bordering the Mediterranean (Europe, Africa, and the East).
Its purpose is to assist brothers in developing their obediences—particularly young obediences—by providing international correspondents and, above all, by creating a communication platform that ensures intercontinental visibility while respecting the identity, cultural, ritual, and symbolic specificities of each lodge, in accordance with the “Confederative Charter” and the “Manifesto.”
The Mediterranean, a crossroads of civilizations, is a place of exchange between North and South, East and West, the Judeo-Christian and Arab-Muslim worlds—combining modernity with Masonic tradition, Anglo-Saxon with Latin—of which Malta is a symbol.
The G.L.M. promotes the principles, humanist values, and initiatory ideals of Freemasonry throughout the three continents and the Mediterranean basin, with an emphasis on the dignity and freedom of the human person, particularly freedom of thought.
Through its relations with the Grand Lodges of the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific, the G.L.M. aims to contribute to the creation of a global Masonic metaverse.
Article 3: Administrative and Registered Office
The registered office of the association is located at:
91 avenue du Docteur Raymond Picaud, 06150 Cannes, France.
It may be transferred by a simple majority decision of the members at a general assembly.
The presidency and administration are managed by The Grand Lodge of Jerusalem Malta.
Article 4: Duration
The duration of the association is unlimited.
Article 5: Members
The association consists of three categories of members:
1. Founding Members:
- The Grand Lodge of Jerusalem Malta (GLJM)
- The Grand Lodge of Europe and the Mediterranean (GLEM)
- The Grand Lodge of Free Masons (GLML)
2. Active Members:
Membership is open to all Masonic Lodges that share universal Masonic ideals and recognize the Grand Architect of the Universe.
Admission requires sponsorship by a founding member and approval by a two-thirds majority vote at a general assembly.
3. Benefactor Members:
Benefactors are individuals or entities providing financial, material, or other support to the association.
They must respect the values of the association and act in ways that uphold its reputation.
Admission is approved by a simple majority vote at a general assembly.
Benefactors do not have voting rights.
Article 6: Loss of Membership
Membership may be lost through resignation or expulsion, based on a decision of the Executive Committee, later ratified by the general assembly by a simple majority vote.
Article 7: Presidency and Governance
The association is governed by a President and an Executive Committee.
1. The President:
- Presented by the GLJM and elected for a renewable 3-year term.
- Appointed by a majority vote at the general assembly.
- Each founding lodge retains a right of veto.
- The President ensures implementation of decisions, proper functioning of the association, and compliance with the statutes, the confederative charter, and the manifesto.
2. The Executive Committee:
- Composed of the President, one representative from each founding lodge, and one representative per continent (appointed by the lodges of that continent), for a total of seven representatives.
- Defines and promotes the association’s actions.
- Appoints committees for communication, international relations, humanitarian and educational initiatives, and any other purpose necessary to achieve the goals of the G.L.M.
Article 8: General Assembly
The General Assembly meets in Malta at least once a year, or whenever convened by the President or a founding member.
Decisions require:
- Simple majority for ordinary matters
- Two-thirds majority for admission of new active members, statutory amendments, or dissolution
Article 9: Resources
Financial resources include member dues, donations, and voluntary contributions, managed under transparency and accountability principles.
A financial report must be presented and ratified by the General Assembly each year.
Article 10: Liability
As the association does not have legal personality, each member is personally liable for acts carried out in the name of the association.
